Project TOTEM

Project TOTEM (TOuch ThE Music) aims to bring the life of a concert to deaf/hard of hearing people. The experience works by holding transducers that vibrates according to the music. The project uses complex algorithm to transform the sound signal from the final mix that is sent to the concert speakers, to precise vibrations giving a sens of melody. We worked on the user interface allowing the user to control the strength and modes of vibrations of the TOTEM. The main difficulty of this project resides in the complexity of the existing network architecture. In fact, multiple devices are connecting to a "master" controller which manage each device's parameter via a network messages. All this has to happen in a high interferences environment (concert hall). The experience had to be managed by an admin present at the concert who could visualize, control and turn off any device at any given moment.
